July 19th: Scratch Art

Join us July 19th at 8 PM as we celebrate the opening of "Scratch Art", a remarkable collection of scratchboard art from over 200 tattoo artists worldwide.

"Scratchboard is not a medium that most artists think about much. Many of us played around with crude scratchboards in grade school and never picked up the medium again. However, it turns out to be a versatile fine art medium that has a number of interesting parallels with tattooing, including the need for planning and the lack of any way of erasing. In the new book Scratch Art (Proton Press, $40) this medium is explored in depth by around 200 tattoo artists, using tools ranging from steel wool to tattoo needles. The rules: None. Any style, any subject. The result is a 272 page powerhouse of amazing art by a long list of today's leading tattoo visionaries including Aaron Cain, Bob Tyrrell, Nick Baxter, Jon Clue, Filip Leu, Timothy Hoyer, Michele Wortman, Guy Aitchison and many others. This book is a perfect addition to your home or studio art collection; with its pages representing over 2000 hours of work, it's a book worth picking up and flipping open again and again. For more information about the book, go to www.hyperspacestudios.com.

However, nothing beats seeing the pieces in person. We expect a good crowd including many of the participating artists. Don't miss this landmark gallery exhibition!

We will also be featuring our first live art installation during the opening reception. We invite everyone in attendance to add their mark to our "Scratch Wall", an assembly of 8x10 scratch boards linked together to make one big artistic experience. at the the end of the night, we will be auctioning off the wall piece by piece to benefit LITTLE KIDS ROCK. This Charity is dedicated to putting music instruments and funding into public school programs, and we are proud to donate all the proceeds of the auction to them. You can visit their website at www.littlekidsrock.org

April 19th - May 31st, 2008: Skull & Sword

Canvas Los Angeles is proud to showcase Skull & Sword, a highly anticipated group show that features new original works by an elite group of modern artists with roots in tattooing, graffiti, painting, and graphic design. Curated by San Francisco tattoo and graffiti artist NORM, this exhibit is a testament to the power and relevance of what many still deem "outsider art".

Whether in tattooing, graffiti writing, or fine art, Skull & Sword's artists are in the top echelon of their field. Admired by their peers and highly sought after by collectors, they are fearless innovators. Many are considered godfathers of their community, trailblazers who inspired countless up and comers. Others are relatively young, or under the radar. It is their vision and drive that sets this group of artists apart from the rest, and that brings them all together for this exhibit. Skull & Sword is about artists on a lifetime quest for excellence.

Presented by The Skull & Sword Family and The Seventh Letter.

December 20, 2007 — January 20, 2008: Revisited: A Tribute to Flash from the Past.

What started as a large-scale painting project conceived by tattoo artists, Steve Boltz and Bert Krak, has evolved into a must-have, highly collectible hardbound book from Revenant Publishing. Revisited: A Tribute to Flash from the Past features modern day renditions of classic flash sheets originally presented in Don Ed Hardy's Flash from the Past. Over 90 contemporary tattoo artists contributed flash sheets derived from and inspired by these classic sheets.

Asked to stay relatively true to the look and content of the original sheets, these artists used modern painting methods to add their interpretations, giving their assigned sheets new life. The outcome is a book filled with powerful, timeless tattoo images with a modern day twist. Canvas Los Angeles is proud to display prints from the pages of this commemorative and timeless coffee table book.
